Ventus
I am the founder of Ventus, the Atlanta-based investment and asset management firm focused on air cargo and energy transition infrastructure. I am passionate about air cargo and as an investment philosophy, I favor long term strategies involving deep and sustainable transformations, extracting maximum value for stakeholders and communities. My air cargo investment strategy goes back to 2017 when I started amassing expertise from previous successful platforms with the aim of creating a global asset-based platform. In 2018 I teamed up with Oaktree Capital Management (OCM) who committed €200 million of equity to fund a pan-European air cargo investment strategy. The slow deal flow and the Pandemic dampened OCM’s aviation appetite, and in 2020 I saw an opportunity to take the strategy forward and founded Ventus. In April 2021, Ventus successfully acquired, together with a Macquarie backed Singapore fund, Skyport a.s., the leading air cargo company in Czech Republic and Slovakia. This complex transaction is comprised of handling operations run by almost 200 employees in a 20,000 sqm semi-automated terminal at Prague airport. Since the acquisition, I acted as de-facto Chairman and part-time CEO/COO. I have been running a thorough ‘hands-on’ transformation of the company. Today, Skyport’s market share is growing both in Prague and Bratislava and the company is currently one of the most efficient and modern air cargo handlers in Europe. The investment team at Ventus has developed an extensive knowledge of the air cargo market, both at real infra level and air cargo handling operations. We are leveraging the experience gained by further investing through either developments or acquisitions. Bio and Professional Experience Born in Bucharest, Romania, I studied civil engineering at Technical University of Civil Engineering of Bucharest. After graduating in 2000, I worked as a structural engineer in Dublin, and London, and have been part of project teams of some landmark projects across the UK and Ireland (HS1, Heathrow T5, Wembley Stadium, The Shard). I started in the property industry with Multiplex and Brookfield in London in 2005 and subsequently started my own firm that went on to manage and develop large retail and residential projects in Europe. In 2010, I moved to the US where I focused on sponsoring investment strategies in real estate and infrastructure. I reside in Atlanta and London, holding US, British and Romanian citizenship and divide my time between the portfolio companies and offices in Prague, Zurich and Atlanta.
