Korean Air has upcycled its retired mechanic uniforms, creating 2,000 durable tool pouches to support its maintenance teams.

With the rollout of new eco-friendly uniforms for maintenance, aerospace, and cargo teams in April 2024, Korean Air collected its previous uniforms rather than discarding them.

The airline then transformed these garments into functional pouches tailored for essential maintenance tools.

Partnering with global upcycling specialist Nukak, Korean Air transformed 700 retired winter jackets into practical tool pouches, preserving the original fabric’s durability and quality.

With feedback-driven design elements, the pouches can hold two screwdrivers and feature a belt-mounted buckle for easy access on the job.

The pouches will be distributed to maintenance teams on November 15.

Korean Air continues to expand its upcycling initiatives. The airline has previously transformed retired life vests into travel pouches and tote bags, crafted hot water bag covers from end-of-cycle inflight cabin blankets, and produced medical pouches from used crew uniforms.

The airline has also created unique upcycled goods, such as name tags and golf ball markers, from retired aircraft fuselage material.
