A significant number of global flights have been cancelled today, while the UK prepares for its busiest weekend of air travel this year, according to data from Cirium.
Global Flight Cancellations: Over 1,000 flights (1,078) have been cancelled worldwide today, with this figure expected to change as the day progresses.
UK Weekend Departures: From Friday, July 19, to Sunday, July 21, a total of 9,075 flights are scheduled to depart from UK airports, equating to over 1.6 million seats.
Busiest Day for UK Departures: This Friday, July 19, is set to be the busiest day for UK flight departures so far this year, with over 3,214 flights scheduled. This marks the highest number of daily departures since October 2019.
Year-on-Year Increase: Compared to the same weekend in 2023, scheduled departures have increased by 4%.
Approaching Pre-Pandemic Levels: Scheduled departures across the weekend are set to reach 93% of 2019 levels, reflecting a strong recovery in air travel.
Increased Capacity: While the number of UK departures remains below 2019 levels, there are over 2,500 more available seats from UK airports over the three days compared to the same weekend in 2019. This increase is attributed to the use of larger aircraft.
This data highlights the ongoing recovery in the aviation sector, with UK airports experiencing a surge in activity as travellers take to the skies in large numbers once again.
