Prestwick Airport’s recently filed annual accounts reveal a rise in the debt it owes to the Scottish Government, reaching £55.5 million, with accumulated interest now at £12.1 million.

The Ayrshire hub, nationalised in 2013 to prevent closure, received £43.4 million in loans for stabilisation, and while no fresh borrowing has been added recently, interest has grown by over £3 million in the past financial year.

Despite a 7% dip in revenue to £54.1 million, Prestwick reported a near doubling of its pre-tax profit, reaching £1.5 million—its fifth consecutive profitable year.

Airport Chairman Willie Mackie noted the ongoing challenges yet credited the airport’s strategic approach for positive outcomes.

A significant portion of the airport’s revenue, £34.1 million, came from fuel sales, mainly driven by military customers including the RAF, the Canadian and US air forces, and NATO exercises. However, fuel pricing was softer than in previous years, affecting overall revenue.

Passenger numbers grew to 523,000 from 459,000 the previous year, attributed solely to Ryanair flights.

Cargo and fixed base operations saw lower revenue, while property, aerodrome, and passenger activity showed improvement.

Multiple bids have been initiated for the sale of Prestwick, with the Scottish Government aiming to eventually return the airport to private ownership.

Current efforts include exploring market interest in collaboration with Onex Corporation, a Canadian investment firm.

New strategic partnerships, including with Royal Mail and a US-based airport, seek to boost cargo and e-commerce traffic.

Chief Executive Ian Forgie noted that Prestwick’s diverse operations are resilient, positioning the airport to seize growth opportunities.

The Scottish Government spokesperson acknowledged recent expressions of interest but stated that further details remain confidential at this time.

Wizz Air has reported a strong performance in October 2024, carrying 5.6 million passengers, a year-on-year increase of 4.1%, with a load factor of 92.9%.

The airline continues to grow in passenger numbers and expand its operations across Europe.

On October 21st, Wizz Air announced the establishment of a temporary base in Chisinau, Moldova, with new direct connections to 16 destinations set to commence from December 16th.

The airline also celebrated the grand opening of its €38 million training centre in Rome Fiumicino on October 1st.

This facility will support annual recurrent training for over 4,800 pilots, underscoring Wizz Air’s commitment to workforce development.

In emissions metrics, Wizz Air reported a slight year-on-year increase of 1.9% in CO2 emissions per revenue passenger kilometre (RPK), reaching 51.6 grams/RPK in October.

This increase was attributed to a temporary suboptimal fleet mix caused by GTF-related groundings of some A321neo aircraft.

Despite this, October’s emissions improved from the previous month’s 52.3 grams/RPK.

Additionally, Wizz Air revealed a new partnership with Airbus in a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) trial on routes from Barcelona to Budapest (BCN-BUD) and Brussels Charleroi to Budapest (CRL-BUD), showcasing the airline’s ongoing efforts to explore greener aviation alternatives.

Yesterday’s Autumn Budget announcement by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, which includes a notable increase in Air Passenger Duty (APD), a substantial APD rise for private jet users, and a £500 million pledge to improve local road infrastructure, has prompted insights from industry experts, highlighting implications for UK businesses in travel and transport.

Peter Slater, CEO of CMAC Group—a major provider of ground transport and travel management services—shared his perspective on how these fiscal measures are likely to affect businesses.

Slater commented: “The APD increase will impact the travel industry broadly. For short-haul flights, the rise may seem modest, but for businesses with regular short-haul travel needs, these additional costs will accumulate.

“This will push many firms to reassess travel budgets and look into alternative, cost-effective, and sustainable options.”

He also noted that the 50% APD hike for private jet users could shift demand toward commercial flights, fostering greener corporate travel solutions.

“Aligning with sustainability goals, this measure could encourage businesses to opt for less carbon-intensive options,” Slater said.

The £500 million investment to improve local roads and tackle potholes was welcomed by Slater, who underscored the importance of road quality in maintaining safe, efficient transport across the UK.

“Enhanced road conditions will not only reduce vehicle maintenance costs but also improve safety and reliability for logistics and employee commutes,” he stated.

Additionally, Slater praised the government’s commitment to connecting London Euston to the HS2 line, underscoring the benefits of a robust rail network for business travel and environmental sustainability.

“Improved rail infrastructure provides a sustainable, efficient travel option between major UK cities, which is crucial for business productivity,” he added.

Karen Dee, chief executive of AirportsUK, the trade body for UK airports, echoed the mixed responses, welcoming the extension of the advanced fuels fund by one year and the allocation of £975 million in R&D funding to support aerospace innovations towards zero-emission flights.

However, Dee voiced concerns about the APD increase, especially as airports work to upgrade security, promote sustainable travel, and modernise airspace.

“She stated, “If the government aims to make the UK the fastest-growing economy in the G7, it must support airports’ vital role in connectivity and economic growth, while reducing financial and regulatory pressures on the sector.”

AI reduces ground delays by 6%, finds Assaia 2024 turnaround report https://airlinergs.com/ai-reduces-ground-delays-by-6-finds-assaia-2024-turnaround-report/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 09:25:56 +0000 https://airlinergs.com/?p=66085 AI technology used by airports and airlines during the aircraft turnaround is proven to increase operational efficiency and reduce delays

The post AI reduces ground delays by 6%, finds Assaia 2024 turnaround report appeared first on Airline Routes & Ground Services.

AI technology used by airports and airlines during the aircraft turnaround, the time between an aircraft landing and departing again, is proven to increase operational efficiency and reduce delays, according to the 2024 Turnaround Benchmark Report from Assaia.

Contributing significantly to airline and airport profitability, these efficiency gains lower operational costs, improve customer satisfaction and maximize aircraft utilization and airport capacity.

Key findings from the report, which offers detailed analysis of turnaround performance data from global airports where Assaia’s ApronAI technology was active in 2023 and 2024, show that despite an increase in overall traffic at the airports observed, ground delays dropped by 6%, and turnaround time by 4% in twelve months.

This reduction is vital for airlines, as it leads to fewer costly delays – which directly impacts passenger satisfaction.

Additionally, the report highlights an increase in the number of aircraft arriving and departing at each gate, with the median number rising from 4 to 5 ‘turns’ per day.

This change optimizes existing airport capacity, allowing more flights without the need for additional gates, which in turn increases efficiency and boosts potential revenue.

Christiaan Hen, Assaia CEO, says: “With the aviation industry facing ongoing headwinds such as delayed aircraft deliveries, increased air travel demand, higher fuel costs and growing public pressure around sustainability, it has never been more important to prevent inefficiency issues leading to delays and other operational problems.

“The perfect turnaround, which is what Assaia strives to enable, doesn’t just save time, it drives down costs, reduces environmental impact, and enhances the overall passenger experience.

“It is, however, a highly complex and finely balanced process comprising dozens of variables working together to ensure an aircraft lands and departs as efficiently as possible.

“The data in this report is exciting, because it clearly highlights the powerful role AI plays in streamlining airport processes, not only by reducing ground delays, but also by optimizing gate productivity to significantly improve profitability for both airlines and airports alike.”

Assaia’s report also notes a difference between European and North American airport gate utilization performance, mostly attributed to differing gate operation models.

According to the data, European airports manage gate capacity more efficiently, achieving more turns per gate each day, but perform worse in terms of delays.

This highlights a tradeoff between maximizing capacity and maintaining on-time performance (OTP).

Hen comments, “As the demand for air travel continues to grow, the question arises of how much longer the North America model will be sustainable, with capacity wasted due to the constraints of airline-operated gates.”

Boeing shares fell 2.7% in U.S. pre-market trading on Thursday after workers voted to extend a nearly six-week strike, casting fresh uncertainty over the company’s financial recovery and operational stability.

The move comes after 64% of unionized factory workers on the U.S. West Coast rejected Boeing’s latest contract offer, which would have ended the industrial action that has largely shut down production of its commercial jets, including the 737 MAX.

The rejected contract proposal from Boeing included a 35% general wage increase over four years but did not reinstate a defined benefit pension plan, a key issue for the striking machinists.

The vote prolongs the strike, which has disrupted production lines and delayed deliveries, creating significant pressure on Boeing’s efforts to stabilize finances after a series of setbacks.

The rejection is seen as a setback for Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, who took charge in August with a pledge to mend relations with factory workers and improve operational efficiencies.

The extension of the strike leaves the company in a difficult position as it continues to navigate financial pressures and attempts to restore its reputation after recent crises, including safety and quality concerns and an industry-wide shortage of parts and labour.

“Boeing is going to have to settle it and just make a higher offer, because they are just not in a position to duke it out,” said Nick Cunningham, an analyst at Agency Partners, highlighting the limited options available to the company.

Boeing’s ongoing labour dispute coincides with financial challenges, as the company has been working to improve its cash flow.

Last week, Boeing filed paperwork allowing it to raise up to $25 billion to maintain its investment-grade rating, and separately secured a $10 billion credit facility.

However, the strike has increased pressure on Boeing to find solutions, potentially forcing it to consider capital raising even before the labour situation is resolved.

Brian West, chief financial officer acknowledged the company’s cash flow issues: “We’re monitoring events closely and we’ll access the markets whenever we determine it’s the right time.”

The extension of the strike has further complicated Boeing’s path to recovery, overshadowing its announcement of a $6 billion loss for the third quarter.

The company’s production lines, including those manufacturing the 737 MAX, have been idled, affecting not only Boeing but also its suppliers, many of whom are facing financial difficulties due to the prolonged strike and previous disruptions.

Newly appointed CEO Kelly Ortberg had previously laid out a plan to restore Boeing’s market share, which has been significantly affected by competition from European rival Airbus.

However, the continued labour dispute threatens to derail these recovery efforts, with Ortberg warning that turning the company’s fortunes around will be a gradual process.

The ongoing strike represents Boeing’s first major labour action in 16 years and adds another layer of complexity to the company’s recovery efforts.

With analysts suggesting that Boeing might need to offer better terms to resolve the dispute, the focus remains on how quickly a resolution can be achieved to restart production and begin delivering aircraft.

As Boeing continues to navigate these challenges, its ability to manage labour relations, secure its financial position, and deliver on its strategic goals will be crucial for regaining investor confidence and market share.
